About Centro de Informacion
Organization
Centro de Información is a not-for-profit Hispanic social service agency founded in 1972. The agency helps nearly 15,000 predominantly low-income Hispanic immigrants each year by providing individual and family counseling, bilingual advocacy, information and referral, immigration and naturalization services, parenting skills training, community education and youth programs.
Centro serves our Hispanic community residing in the greater Fox Valley area: Kane, McHenry, DuPage and Cook counties. However, many clients who seek our services travel from as far as Lake and Will Counties as well as nearby states.
Centro de Información, is the only Hispanic social service agency in Kane County and has been a known community resource for more than 35 years. We have been effective in filling unmet needs of the our Latino community, as well as connecting Hispanic with the community resources they need.
Immigrant families come with little facility, if any with English and little knowledge of American culture, expectations or laws which may lead to their being more vulnerable to multiple problems such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, hunger, unemployment, unmet medical needs, etc.
History
Centro de Información began as an Outreach mission of the United Methodist Church and the Catholic Archdiocese of Rockford. Centro started in borrowed space open once a week to provide information, advocacy and referrals for the then 5,000 Hispanics in the area.
Our community has grown tremendously since then with the population of our communities reaching almost the 40% Hispanic mark. Our services have grown as well.
Centro has been a place for our community, many of whom may have substantially less education and income than the general population and to whom language and culture are barriers to find out how and where to get the help they need for more than 35 years.
Mission Statement
We empower Hispanics and others to integrate in the larger community through education, counseling, and advocacy.
Vision Statement
Every Hispanic shall have the tools to effectively participate in our society. Centro’s activities and its measure of success are linked to this vision.
